Anne Wareham to Niall Hobhouse
Well done for last night - we do need so much more of this kind of thing and you are leading the way. I do hope it met what you were hoping for.
I was very disconcerted to find that gardener/designers like myself (and most British ‘gardeners’ including your mother) were so under represented - hence my incoherent, incomprehensible and outrageous contribution. My point about no-one wanting to know us though may have been confirmed by the indecent haste with which your chair moved on. But am I right in thinking that it is such a person that you are offering the prize to? No professional garden designer, Keen kind of, could win if it involves actually gardening the new garden. Or have I totally misunderstood and that is why there were none of us (apparently) there? or was your mother representing us, rather than being there as she indicated as your mother and intimately involved party?
Confusing. And bugger all that sentimentality! (cf the Pope’s last sentence in your exhibition..)
